Adult volunteering
You don’t have to be an adventurer like Bear Grylls to get involved with Scouting. Do you have first aid knowledge? Are you good with numbers? Handy in the kitchen? Or are you a DIY whizz? We all have useful skills and you can volunteer and help in many ways.
Volunteering with us is easy, fun and flexible – how much time you give is completely up to you. Whether you help out once a fortnight, month or term or just at special events or camps, there is bound to be a role you can play, and no matter how you get involved, we’ll make sure you’re properly trained and supported.
As well as gaining externally recognised skills and having a brilliant time, Scouting also offers the chance to build on personal skills, like teamwork, confidence and leadership. A study found that over 90% of Scouting volunteers believe that the skills and experiences they have gained through Scouting have been of relevance to their working or personal lives.

Ad-hoc volunteering
You may volunteer occasionally with the 1st Hague Scout Group without undergoing background checks. However, you may NOT volunteer on a regular weekly basis, more than once a week, or on more than three days in every thirty days.
You may also NOT be left unsupervised with young people, stay overnight with young people, or handle certain duties, including, but not limited to, money and personal data.
Many of our helpers and leaders are parents of our youth members because they’ve seen firsthand how Scouting benefits young people and want to give something back. It’s also a chance to spend more time with your children and learn new skills. Speak to your child’s leader to discuss how you might become involved.
As long as you’re over 18, you can help out as an adult volunteer in Scouting. There is no upper age limit for adult volunteers.
If you’d like to help out in any way with the running of the 1st Hague Scout Group, please talk to a leader or get in contact, more information is provided below.
Designated carers
If you need to be present at regular weekly because are a designated carer and/or the parent/guardian of a child who needs you to be present, you will need to undergo a background check in line with Scouting Association guidelines.
Accompanying your child to camp.
Nights away from home, particularly camping, are an essential part of the Scouting experience. Our younger members are frequently accompanied by at least one parent/guardian who must be background checked in line with Scouting Association guidelines.
Talk to your child’s Section lead
If you have at least one child enrolled with 1st the Hague and you’d like to help out, please have a chat with your child’s section leader. They’ll be able to answer any questions you may have and can start the background check process.
Don’t delay
Background checks take several weeks or even months to complete. If you are a designated carer or think you may need to accompany your child to meetings, please tell us as soon as your child has been assigned a space. Similarly, if you think you may need to accompany your child to camp, start the background check process as soon as you can so your child doesn’t miss out.
